⭐The 81st International Understanding Lecture: “America: Familiar Yet Unfamiliar! Florida and New Jersey”
The 81st International Understanding Lecture was held on Saturday, October 17, at the event space of Komaki City Central Library, with 36 participants.
The speaker was Max Rothschild, an international relations coordinator (CIR) with Aichi Prefecture. He talked about New Jersey (NJ), where he was born and raised, and Florida (FL), where he moved to attend university.
Although both states are located on the East Coast of the United States, New Jersey in the north and Florida in the south differ in many ways, including climate, food, and language. Since these states are not very familiar to many people in Japan, participants enjoyed learning about their unique characteristics. The discussion of education was also particularly interesting, highlighting differences between the United States and Japan, such as how students commute to school and the lack of a system equivalent to Japan’s ronin period, when students prepare to retake university entrance exams.
Max also shared his experiences working at the U.S. Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, before coming to Aichi Prefecture. One particularly striking story concerned changes to the pavilion’s exhibits following the transition from the Biden administration to the Trump administration. He explained that cuts to the Fulbright scholarship budget led to an exhibit being changed to feature a photograph of President Trump. This firsthand account offered participants a vivid glimpse into the impact of political changes on cultural and educational programs.
Participants responded positively, with one commenting, “I knew very little about New Jersey and Florida, so the talk was really interesting.” The lecture was a great success.
